The Essential Checklist for a Thorough Room Deep Clean

Published January 12th, 2024 by Express Cleaning Facility Services

The average parent spends almost 24 hours per month (a whole day!) cleaning. How much of that is deep cleaning vs surface cleaning? If you spend that much time tidying up, are you really getting your space clean?

You should be doing regular deep cleaning sessions on top of your weekly cleans, but what do those sessions look like? Read on for a quick deep cleaning room checklist so you can get started.

Declutter First

You want to start any deep cleaning session, whether it's spring cleaning, pre-company cleaning, or just a random cleaning day, with decluttering. We accumulate a lot of clutter, and if we don't declutter regularly, it will take over the house.

Look for things that you no longer need or use. Have several boxes or bags ready for your belongings so you can easily throw away or donate the things you no longer need.

You'll be shocked at how much tidier your space is after you declutter. That alone can make a huge difference.

Dust All Surfaces

Once you've decluttered, it's time to dust. Get rid of any dust and grime on your tables, shelves, and knick-knacks with a microfiber cloth or duster.

It's good to work from the top down so any residual dust falls down to the next "level" or the floor to be cleaned up later. When you dust surfaces, make sure to move anything on them. You want to dust underneath things, not just around them!

If you use cleaning products to dust, make sure they're safe for the surfaces you're dusting.

While you're doing this, you should also dust and clean your windows, doorframes, windowsills, and mirrors. It's easy to forget them!

Strip and Clean Bedding

If you're cleaning a bedroom or living room, make sure you clean your linens and bedding. This is the perfect time to throw everything into the washer so you can clean your beds, chairs, and couches without anything in the way.

While your linens are going through the wash, you have plenty of time to clean and tidy the house before it's time to put them back. This is also a great time to freshen up your mattresses and couches with baking soda

Clean the Floors

The floors should generally be last when you're cleaning. When you dust your surfaces, some dust and debris will fall to the ground. By vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping last, you'll get rid of any of that residual debris.

You should sweep hard floors before mopping. For carpets, consider using baking soda first to freshen them before vacuuming for an extra clean home.

That's Your Deep Cleaning Room Checklist

Use this deep cleaning room checklist to get your home cleaner than it's been in years. A deep clean doesn't have to take all day. If you take it step-by-step, you can get it done before you know it.

But what if you don't have time? Consider hiring a professional cleaning service instead. At Express Cleaning Facility Services, our professional house cleaners can get your space cleaner than you thought possible.
